Dr, Andreas M. Kaiser, MD, FACS, FASCRS, a Professor of Clinical Surgery, graduated in 1988 from the University of Zurich in Switzerland. After an internship in Surgical Pathology, Dr. Kaiser trained in General Surgery at the University Hospital of Zurich (1990-1998), interrupted by a two year research fellowship at Harvard Medical School. He completed a fellowship in Visceral Surgery at the University Hospital in Zurich, and in Colorectal Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine at USC. In 2001, Dr. Kaiser joined the USC faculty, and from 2008- 2009, he served as Interim Chairman of the Department of Colorectal Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (FASCRS), and a member of several national and international professional associations and committees.
Dr. Kaiser has a special interest in colorectal diseases and provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary treatment in the management of colorectal and anal cancer (primary, recurrent cancers, palliative setting), inflammatory bowel disease, acute diverticulitis, functional disorders of the colon and rectum, and benign disorders of the anus. He was a national expert/preceptor for the stapled hemorrhoidectomy (PPH); he is one of few experts nationwide performing continent ileostomies and was instrumental in the development of the T-pouch. He is an expert for evaluation and treatment of fecal incontinence and also one of few surgeons performing the Artificial Bowel Sphincter; most recently, he added the transanal endoscopic microsurgery for rectal polyps and early rectal cancer (TEMS) and Sacral Nerve Stimulation (Interstim) for fecal incontinence to the services offered at USC. Dr. Kaiser's major areas of research interest include Colorectal Cancer, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Diverticulitis, and Fecal Incontinence.
Dr. Kaiser is not only committed to patient-care, but also to research and education. He has written numerous articles, book chapters, including his own book "McGraw-Hill Manual of Colorectal Surgery". He is Editor-in-Chief of "Clinical and Experimental Gastroenterology", and Associate Editor of "Diseases of the Colon and Rectum", the official journal of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons; in addition, he serves on the editorial boards of the "World Journal of Gastroenterology", "World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pathophysiology", "The Open Colorectal Cancer Journal", and "The Open Surgical Oncology Journal". He is/was a member of several national committees (membership committee (chair), standards committee, program committee, CME committee). He served as Guest Editor on Hereditary Colorectal Cancer for "Seminars in Colon and Rectal Surgery", and was the lead author on a ASCRS Task Force for “New Technologies for Fecal Incontinence.”
